Meditation

Meditation is listening to your (inner higher) self

The highest form of meditation is doing your best. By doing, applying oneself fully to each activity that is engaged, persons quiet their senses, and open themselves to the flow from the universal essence. Messages and guidance from the unconscious mind can then filter down into the conscious mind.

Many of our earliest ancestors deep in central Africa understood the principle of meditation well. This is what they lived. Their understanding stemmed in part from their observations of natural law, and the application of that law in their everyday lives. Meditation was not something they set apart time for, they automatically did this as a natural part of their survival. They meditated in each action and behavior that was undertaken. Clearly they gained a lot of benefits by doing their utmost best in everything they engage. Persons nowadays can also benefit by doing likewise.

Honesty, integrity and moral conduct is something that needs to be constantly worked at, in chipping away the inevitable corruption.

About Jason "JJBoogie" Reichert
Jason Reichert, a.k.a. JJBoogie, has been a professional musician for 22 years. He first started out on drums at age eight playing along to Motown records and listening to funk, jazz, R&B & Rock & Roll. By the time he was fifteen he was gigging professionally. Cutting his teeth on the local Atlanta blues scene he later would be performing with Mudcat, Sean Costello, King Johnson and others. Being able to perform with blues legends such as Tinsley Ellis, Tab Benoit, Charles Musselwhite and the great Taj Mahal also was very inspiring for Jason.

After many years of playing blues, jazz, rock & gospel and being greatly influenced by all the amazing guitar players he toured and performed with, he made the transition to guitar with ease. With the encouragement of his fellow musicians he was able to surpass his expectations as a guitarist recording several albums as well as cowriting, producing and performing with the two time Grammy award winning Hip Hop group Arrested Development!

JJ is also an exceptional Mixing Engineer producing two top ten hits for Arrested Development in Asia and is currently working on mixing the next album!

When Jean-Michel Basquiat died at the age of 27, he left behind over 1000 paintings and 1000 drawings—an enormous
amount of artwork. Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child is a biography told by friends. Director Tamra Davis includes interview footage she shot with him in 1986 when she was a film student—footage that was put away for over twenty years. She talks to the people who knew him best—both personally and professionally. That is not to say that those who tell their stories with Basquiat whitewash his flaws. The film reflects the love and admiration Basquiat's friends felt for him, but it also conveys a sense of disappointment in the pain that was also a part of his life.

The film follows his career from the time he was a homeless runaway in New York through his days of great affluence and his descent into drugs. His work as an artist began as a literate tagger, known as SamoÂ©.He moved on to postcards, t-shirts and eventually paintings.He was a part of a Bohemian, countercultural art scene in New York during the late 70s.He became an extremely successful neo-expressionist artist, whose painting quickly made him a millionaire—perhaps too quickly.

For those unfamiliar with his art, this film will provide an excellent introduction, although there is only a bit of explanation about style and subject manner. For those who appreciate his work, this will be a chance to see many of his works, even if only briefly.

Although his art is very central to the film, it is really more about the artist. Basquiat was a complex artist.Just as his art had a childlike quality, but a very mature sensibility, so too was his life a series of contrasts. Although he is extremely out of mainstream life, he had a very strong drive for success—especially to be recognized as the best. While he seems to make his art for himself, he was always seeking to impress his father—something he was never quite able to do. His art was fresh and bold, but often it was tied to a broad idea of art history.

Seeing him in archival footage reveals an intelligent young man. He was multilingual and well versed in art, even though he was a high school dropout. He seems to have been absolutely driven to create—often working on multiple paintings at the same time. As I watched the film, the concept that occurred to me was "genius"—especially in the sense of someone possessed by a creative spirit. But that genius had a downside as well.

As one of his business acquaintances related, people have a certain "romance of artist as a person whose life is so intense it is more than he can bear." Basquiat seems to have believed that he was such a person. So when success came—and it came very quickly and powerfully—he was not quite ready to cope with it. He lived large and expensively simply because he could. Julian Schnabel (a fellow artist and friend who made the film Basquiat a few years after Basquiat died) says in this film, "He just didn't have the tools to navigate the sea of shit."

Because this film is so personal, there is clearly a sense of loss about this young artist whose light burned brightly but briefly. There is grief over the works of art that were never made, but also celebration for the legacy he left in his art.

In this exclusive new interview, French photographer JR (Juxtapoz #97) gives us the inside scoop on what he has planned for
his upcoming exhibit this June in Los Angeles. Possibly the most succinct definition we’ve heard, JR states, “The artist’s role is to raise questions.”

You will be showing in Los Angeles this June alongside Anthony Micallef, Vhils, and Conor Harrington. What do you have planned for this California show?

Some special pieces of course, as the space will be pretty big. But mostly, if we can make it, I’ll try to do a collaborative piece together with Vhils.

Your gallery and outdoor art is similar in aesthetic but not in size, as your outdoor photographs have reached heights of multiple storied buildings. How do you approach outdoor versus indoor work differently? Do you have different aims with each?

I always make sure to clearly separate the inside work from the outside work. I am working on some pieces for indoors that would be impossible to create outdoors, such as video pieces, 3D pieces, even a color pasted installation. For me, indoors is a place to show the other different layers of my work.

What do you hope viewers take away from experiencing your work?

It’s all about exchanging visions, raising questions. The artist’s role is to raise questions, so I sometimes hope that viewers will go and see by themselves and find their answers.

Since the past few years I have worked a lot in places that have been in our media - because of events or violence happening there - going to these places and working on projects in those locations has been such a surprise in the way that the people received the projects and reappropriate it all for their own message.

I am always amazed by the everyday ‘cliché’ we are generating. It’s so easy to fall into it, it’s human, but sometimes it’s interesting to go and search for the limits. they are not always where we think they are.

What else are you working on? Any other big plans or trips upcoming this year?

I am working on a movie that has been selected this year for the Cannes Festival. It has involved more than 2 years of work in parallel with my other projects. I hope it will help in showing the other dimension of my work, the story behind the image. Of course some new projects are on the way, but for that you’ll have to keep an eye open to the streets...

Jack black on new video games!

Jack Black’s voiced A Kung fu panda and even gotten his rom-com on in the past few years (or so we’re told—somehow we missed The Holiday), but we have no problem pigeonholing dude (ayo!): To us, he’s always best as the doughy, manically off-kilter “schlub” (his word) in flicks like Orange County and Tropic Thunder. So we were suitably stoked to hear about his playing a heavy metal roadie in Brütal Legend, a new open-world video game from Double Fine/EA. Legend’s writer, gaming cult hero Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango, Psychonauts), delved deep into metal mythology and peppered the game with allusions to the genre’s classics, even getting rock gods Lemmy Kilmister, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rob Halford to voice characters. We got with JB recently to talk VGs, metal, and how to rock into your 40s.
So how did you get involved in the game?
Jack Black: Tim Schafer contacted me; we met at a hotel, had sex, and then he told me about the video game…no, I’m kidding. I was staying at a hotel at the time, I don’t remember why. So we met—out by the pool, not in my bedroom. I was already a fan of his, because Psychonauts is an amazing game he did. It’s a classic.
A lot of hardcore gamers get skeptical when celebrities sign up to do games. What makes your involvement different?
Jack Black: I think the difference is I actually love games and I understand them.
You’ve got pretty decent heavy metal credentials, too.
Jack Black: Well, I’m drawn to old-school heavy met-tull, because I was there back in the day when it all went down.
You have a very distinctive way of saying “metal.”
Jack Black: I say “metal,” like “My car’s made of metal.” But if it’s the music, then you have to do something to distinguish it. “Met-tull.” Whoever invented that descriptive label for music is kind of a genius, ’cause when you say it, it’s like an ancient incantation.
What was your first concert?
Jack Black: I’m not going to tell you…OK, my first concert was actually Devo, “Freedom of Choice.” I wasn’t met-tull yet. My second concert, I think, was Loverboy. And that was not heavy met-tull. My first met-tull concert was Sabbath, but it was not the “Mob Rule” tour, which I wish it was. But whatever, I like-a me some Sabbath. I like-a me some Iron Maiden, and I really like-a me some Judas Priest. That’s the triumvirate of met-tull, when the world was a simpler place and the devil reigned supreme. Now there’s no devil in rock.
Did you study with any roadies to prep for the role?
Jack Black: Every time Tenacious D is on the road, we always see the same guy: Joe Beebe. I thought about Joe a lot while I was making the game. There’s a depth of emotion to the roadie—he’s come a million miles to stare into your eyes while you look off into the horizon. And you know that this road never ends. There’s a shyness to it, but there’s also a comfort. The dichotomy of the roadie. Profound.
You just turned 40. Are there any kinds of met-tull calisthenics you need to do to maintain that state of mind as you enter middle age?
Jack Black: Because I’ve always been sort of a schlub, I’ve actually improved my health, dramatically. Even though I’m 40, I can be in better shape than when I was 30, because I was in such a bad state then. I recommend that everyone in their youth be as out of shape as possible so that when you turn 40, people can go, “Wow, you look much better now.”
So if you listen to heavy metal and play video games, the day you turn 40 you’ll be as healthy as everyone else.
Jack Black: Is that all I’ve managed to impart to you? Don’t forget…I can’t remember. Yeah, you’re right. If I had to wrap it up I would say play video games, listen to met-tull, don’t exercise until you’re 39. And love thy neighbor.

Arrested Development Ninth Studio Album "Strong"

Since the group’s founding in 1988, Arrested Development has been blessing the world with their infectious melodies and
grooves. Their first album, 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days…in the Life was released in 1992. The album’s title was a reflection on how long it took them to establish a record deal. During the same year, they became one of the major success stories in the music industry.
Founded in Atlanta by rapper Speech and DJ Headliner, the group were described by Rolling Stone as a “progressive rap collective fusing soul, blues, Hip Hop, and Sly & the Family Stone-influenced funk with political, socially conscious lyrics.” At that time, they mutually agreed to make the transition to a more positive, Afrocentric theme after hearing the legendary Public Enemy.
This album went onto spawn the hit single “Tennessee,” a strongly spiritual track that hit #7 on the US pop charts and #3 on the R&B charts and sparked the album to sell over four million copies. The two follow-up singles, “People Everyday” (a rewrite of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Everyday People”) and “Mr. Wendal” performed extraordinarily well. With accolades pouring in from all sides, Arrested Development ended up winning Grammys for Best Rap Album and Best New Artist, going on to be named Rolling Stone’s Band of the Year. After breaking up in 1996, the group reunited in 2000 and since then they’ve been releasing music internationally.
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of speaking to Speech, co-founding member of Arrested Development about what the group has been up to recently and to speak on their brand new album, Strong.
Speech spoke on the urgency and importance to do a different record than what the public has been hearing in the music industry lately.
“We wanted to do a very concise record,” he said. “A record we felt that was filling a void in the industry right now. There aren’t many people really talking about the things that are happening or have happened as far as worldly issues. We wanted to write about those issues. The reason we entitled the album Strong is because we feel it’s one of the strongest records we’ve ever done.”
“We came right out of the gates with a song called ‘Bloody’, and then we just move on throughout the record with everything from songs with a rock edge to old school, classic Hip Hop from the ’90s then to party songs to songs that have a message. A song like ‘Haters’ was really a stretch for us to do.”

Arrested Development’s new album is being released on Speech’s record label, Vagabond Records. For many years now, the group has garnered a strong following in Japan and the first single to be released from Strong entitled ‘The World is Changing’ is currently #9 on the music charts there. Speech suggested experimentation was one of the deciding factors in making this record a personal success for the group.
“We definitely wanted to experiment,” he said. “On this album we went with a harder edge, it’s a lot more straightforward, in your face lyrics. One Love brought a lot more to this album and he brings a certain style with him. Eshe and Tasha are doing more vocals on this album and it brings a certain R&B style to it. We continue to push the boundaries compared to our other material and the rest of our catalog.”
Arrested Development as a group consists of Speech, Montsho Eshe, One Love, Tasha Larae, Rasadon, Baba Oje, JJ Boogie and Za. This ensemble has been part of the group for the past eight years with the exception of Baba Oje, he is one of the original members and Tasha Larae. Tasha Larae has been with the group for two years now and this lineup is a slight variation from the original collection of artists. Their last five albums – Heroes of Harvest (2002), Extended Revolution (2003), Among the Trees (2004), Since the Last Time (2006) and Strong (2010) – were well received in international markets and have been released under Speech’s Vagabond records.
Speech discussed how much the music scene has changed since the early ’90s and the resurgence of conscious artists regaining a voice again in the mainstream.
“There is so much that has changed from how people receive the music to the actual respect they have for it,” said Speech. “I believe it’s a lot less than what it used to be. There is less balance as far as the subject matter that’s being promoted in the industry today. It leads to the fact that many companies have consolidated into one so you have these huge conglomerates where there are few diverse opinions and attitudes.”
“For me, K’naan is a great example of how conscious Hip Hop is on the rise again. He’s coming with a different perspective whether he addresses issues on where he’s from, Africa or other places and he is getting great recognition on an international scale now.”
Recently, the group performed cuts off of their album live at the Essence Music Festival held in New Orleans, Louisiana. They were well embraced by old and new fans alike. Their plans include touring the US, Europe, and Australia for the rest of 2010 into 2011. Currently, they’re looking to establish more placements on the American and international airwaves.
“We’re touring right now,” said Speech. “We’re planning to go to Australia at the end of the year. We’re doing a lot of places in Europe. But we’re touring and promoting this record in the United States right now. We’re reaching out to do more interviews to let people know that we’re back and we’re doing new music. We’ll be hitting the UK real hard later on this year. We’re going to do London, Birmingham, Manchester, and many places on the outskirts of the country.”
“Many underground stations here in the States are playing us as well as internet, college radio and radio stations that has freer format are playing us. Overseas, Germany, France and Japan are really promoting our new record right now.”

Strong is Arrested Development’s ninth studio album and it’s sure to be one of their best efforts to date. The video for their single “Greener” has been picked up by Vh1 Soul.

The Soundless Music

Rasadon creates the brand!

Years of schooling and designing for Arrested Development has lead the drummer of the group, Rasadon,
to believe that he has what it takes to develop his own brand.

Granolalife caught up with rasadon, and here is what he had to say.

gL: My first question is, what does the dn stand for?

Ras: My first and middle initials, don norris

gL: And the star represents what?

Ras: Of course me! hahaha! its my way of standing out amongst other brands.

gL: So whenever this brand hits the stores, what can the buyer look to be purchasing?
Or is that something you are still working on?

Ras: No! I've always been a fan of the skate and bmx scene, so a lot of my work reps
the underground in many ways. Also with being a graphic designer, I like things
to be clean. But to answer the question, I'll be putting my logo on whatever and
whoever want to collaborate, like decks, apparel, tee's etc.

gL: Like pharell I imagine?

Ras: Yup!, it would be nice to do a collaboration with pharell, I respect that kat a lot.

Ras: But I wanna be established first, so the kids don't think that I'm a poser tryin
to get into the game on someone else's coattail.

gL: Any idea when we can look for your brand in stores?

Ras: Right now it's my tag, meaning whenever I create something that I consider
a piece of art, you can look for my logo!

gL: Before we let you get away, can you say it for us again?

Ras: No doubt! It's da n swagg!, simple huh? I always think when it comes to designing,
people need to be able to recognize your brand whenever they see the logo for
years to come. Your not "n" til you have da n swagg! in ya life!................peace!!

I'm the artist, I'm the drummer; I'm.
As long as I can remember I've been deciding between two worlds, should
I be just a drummer?, or should I go on to be all that I can be in both worlds?,
while this was a question I've dealt with for years, it wasn't until recently through
a lifestyle of meditation that I learned to just be.

Recently I saw "This is it" which is a movie about Michael Jackson last attempt to
show the world what he'd be like if he had the chance to do
another tour. Through his movie, I started to realize just how much one should
just do whatever you are doing to the best of ones ability!, and be authentic as
possible, cause one never knows.
